Memorial Tournament

The annual Memorial Tournament was held Friday, June 6'th, 2014.

9:00 AM: Players and guests met at Centennial Park Diamond 3 (south-east diamond) for coffee, drinks, donuts, fruit, etc. A list of players on each team was posted and uniforms handed out.

9:30 AM: Glen Shields spoke about each of the former players in the league who were honored. All the participating players were lined up along the 1st and 3rd base lines. The friends and members of the family were standing in the infield with Glen.

It is worthwhile pointing out how much our guests appreciated our doing this. In a telephone conversation, one of the widows said, "I'm just praying for sunshine." And, she meant it!

The ladies attending the ceremony were:

• Gloria Pickering (Buba), 20 friends and relatives, some from B.C.
• Taffy Sbrolla (Don), 4 friends/relatives plus two sons if they can get off work.
• Krista Joseph (Billy), 3 relatives.
• Eleanor McCray (Danny), brought by grand-daughters from Bradford.

John Miller, Buba Pickering's 22-year-old grandson threw out the first pitch as well as played an inning or two with us. What makes this special is that he was using Buba's glove and wearing the uniform which Buba wore twenty years ago in the inaugural year of Etobicoke Slo-Pitch - "The Purple Precinct". To Anne Colhoun, Barb Wade, and the members of "The 20 Year Club", this, no doubt, brought back many memories.

10:15 AM (approximately): Let the games begin! Each team played two games. Winners of the "Memorial Cup": White Team.

1:30 PM: Lunch buffet at "The Grille".
