ESSA Spares / Substitutes Process - Part 3
Clarification of the circumstances when a team will request a spare
player from the bye team.
- Captains may ask a player from the bye team to be a spare once
there are no spares available from the spares list.
- An ESSA player whose team is on the bye day is eligible to spare
for any team requiring a spare when such team has a roster of less
than 11 players.
If a team has 11 players but is without a pitcher, then a spare pitcher
can be picked up to increase the roster above 11.
- The opportunity for players from the bye team to spare is dependent on:
- a team missing players and having a roster of less than 11 players.
- a team requiring a player of similar rating.
- Players should be encouraged to attend games on the day of their bye.
- Any players from the bye team interested in sparing should make
their Captain aware and note their interest to the other team Captains
that are playing.
- A list of interested and available players from the bye team should
be provided to the other Captains.
- Bye team players that have interest in sparing should be aware
that they may only be asked to spare if a team is below 11 players
and is missing a similarly rated player.
In the first 2 preliminary rounds, a team may pick up an available
spare even if the rating is different if no other spares are available
so that a team fields 11 players.
