The Etobicoke 55+ Slo-Pitch League (ESPL) was originally organized under the auspices of the City of Toronto Parks and Recreation Department, and operated out of the Fairfield Seniors Centre in South Etobicoke.
The ESPL was a recreational league and existed to allow seniors, both male and female, 55 years of age and older to play slo-pitch on a regular basis from the middle of May to the middle of September each year.
The League began in 1994 and operated through an Executive and a system of committees which organized and conducted the day-to-day activities of the League. Registration was handled by the City, the Centennial Park diamonds were provided by the City, a Fall Banquet was provided, and some money for incidental equipment; the ESPL also raised funds themselves, mainly by team sponsorships.
In 2021 the ESPL Executive was replaced by the Etobicoke Senior Slo-Pitch Association (ESSA) Board of Directors in preparation for running the (shortened) 2021 season independently of the City of Toronto if necessary, which proved to be the case.
As of the 2022 season, ESSA has operated independently from the City of Toronto and the City of Mississauga, and is now using diamonds in Mississauga.
The name was changed in 2023 to "Expanded Senior Slo-Pitch Association" to better reflect that members come from all over the greater Toronto area.
The Association is an unincorporated non-profit organization. The Association Constitution and By-Laws are available here.
One of the main objectives is to balance all teams in strength. Although there is competitiveness among teams the main thrust is for all players to have fun and get exercise.
All team uniforms (sweaters), bats, balls, bases and game incidentals are supplied by the Association.
