ESSA Job Description - Team Captain

The Team Captain's role is one of the most important roles of the
Etobicoke Senior Slo-Pitch Association.
Captains must communicate and support the Association's values and rules
with their team members.
This includes upholding the concept of fair play and sportsmanship and
striving to create and maintain a high level of team spirit.
Position Description
Team Responsibilities
- Attend the annual camp for new and/or requalifying players to
assesses their skills.
- Recruit an Assistant Captain to replace yourself in case of absence.
- Arrange for a scorekeeper.
- Telephone players to inform them of game cancellation, if necessary.
- Delegate responsibilities to team members regarding equipment,
first aid, installing and removing bases, umpiring, etc.
- Prepares the lineup for game.
- Provide players the opportunity to play and learn different
positions while maintaining a competitive level of play.
- Work with players on skill development and team strategy.
- Meet with umpire(s), if assigned, before game to discuss rules
and courtesy runners.
- Be aware of, and understand, ESSA and SPN rules and take lead with
any rule discussions with the opposition Captain and/or umpires.
- Arrange for the pickup and return of bases, pitching screen and
home plate for all home games.
- Oversee the care of any injured player and complete injury report
form, as needed.
- Report team scores on the ESSA website after each game.
- Listen to concerns and suggestions of your team players and act
on them as appropriate.
Board Responsibilities
- Prepare for and attend Board of Directors Meetings or supply an alternate.
- Act as a liaison between players and the Board of Directors.
- Promote the Association to team players and encourage their
participation in events, committees, and other leadership roles.
- At the end of the year supply a report to the Board of Directors
outlining areas of potential improvement.
- Be responsible for the return of all
equipment to the Equipment Manager at year's end.
- Provide players ratings and opinions to assist in the drafting of players.
- Prepare for the Association's annual Draft; be knowledgeable of
players on other teams, their skills, attributes, etc.
