An excellent year - we finished in first place with an 23-1 record!
We swept both games of the semi-final double header against "Balk Naked" (thought the second one was close!). Scores were 15-3 and 12-9.
In the final, we played "Bert & Ernie's". Some game highlights from the double header games of the final for those who missed it, or just want to relive it:
A slow start in the first game, both offensively and defensively - we were down 14-6 going into the bottom of the 6'th inning. We had a string of walks and solid hits, when Mike P hit a line drive to right field that skipped past the fielder on the concrete-like brown grass, resulting in a grand-slam home run for a total of 7 runs to make the score 14-13. We held them scoreless in the top of the seventh, but could only get the tying run in our half of the inning. B&E scored 3 in the top of the 8'th, but we come back with 4 in the bottom of the inning, the tying and winning runs coming off a hit to right center from Mike N.
The second game was a complete turn-around defensively - B&E got up 6-1 early on a pair of 3-run homers, but we came back to make it 7-6, which held until the bottom of the 7'th inning, where B&E scored only 1 run to go to extra innings again!
In the top of the 8'th, everybody batted and the top half of the order went up twice --- we scored a huge 15 runs, making the score 22-7. In the bottom of the 8'th, they went 3 up, 3 down.
Some other highlights:
Andrea pitched solidly, giving only a few walks in the 16 innings played;
Billy threw out one of their batters at first
base from medium left center field to shut down a rally;
Brad made a couple of catches out in the darkness (past the light posts)
in right field (at least the umpire said he caught them - we couldn't see
from the infield!);
in the second game 8'th inning, the top 5 batters in the order
(Sam, Mike N, Andrea, Billy, Jeff) all scored twice.
