Etobicoke 55+ Slo-Pitch League

Pick-up games cancelled for remainder of 2017.

The Etobicoke 55+ Slo-Pitch League started play in 1994. The League was founded by Anne Colhoun, under the auspices of the City of Toronto Department of Parks and Recreation; she is also an Honorary League Member.

These players have been in the League since inception (the "20 Year Club"): Bert Chalmers, Clare Jones, John Hughson, Lorne Christie, Ralph Currie.
In 2015, these players were inducted into the "Club": Jim Jennings, Vic Leonard.

Round-Robin Schedules / Standings

The 2017 season starts May 8 with team practices, followed by 2 exhibition games. There are 3 round-robins of regular season games, followed by 1 round-robin of playoff qualification games; all those games are listed on the schedule immediately below.

For this coming season, the League will play at Centennial Park (#1 (N), #2 (SW), #3 (SE)), and at Diamond Beach (#5).

The League has permits for the Centennial Park diamonds, and Diamond Beach (#5).

Memorial Tournament

2017 Memorial Tournament

The annual Memorial Tournament was held Friday, June 2, 2017; Centennial Park Diamond #3 (SE).

These former players were remembered: Bert Chalmers, Bill Elwood, John Hagerman, Howard Hall, Ted McConvey, John Ofsanka, George Turriff. Their names were added to the memorial plaque, with family members in attendance.

Donuts and coffee were available before the ceremony and games, and salad, pasta, sausages and chicken fingers were enjoyed at The Grille afterwards (along with a few beverages).

Open to all League players, former players, guests.

League Spring General Meeting

The 2017 Spring General Meeting will be held Thursday, April 27, 10:00 AM, upstairs in the Ski Chalet at Centennial Park (north of the hockey arena). Each player will get an information package including the team rosters, player contact info, game schedule, rule changes, etc.

A pizza and wings lunch will be provided after the meeting; cost $5. Please bring exact amount to make it quicker and easier for those collecting at the door.

League Banquet / End-of-Season Meeting

The 2017 League Banquet and end-of-season Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2017, 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM, at the Canadiana Restaurant (Six Points Plaza, Dundas W / Islington).

Rookie Camp

The 2017 Rookie Camp will be held Wednesday, April 19, Centennial Park, Diamond 1 (NE, by the hockey arena), 10:00 AM.

Rain date is Thursday, April 20; same location and time.

The Grille Restaurant & Bar

The Grille Restaurant & Bar is the official League bar, and also a team sponsor. It is located on the Queensway, just east of the East Mall, on the north side of the road. Players and teams are invited back after the game for lunch and beverages.

Bob Stewart Award

In 2015, the League established the "Bob Stewart Award", in honour and memory of Bob Stewart who was the longest serving ESL team captain. Bob's philosphy of playing was: don't criticize, cheer each other on, and most of all have fun. The award is given each year to someone who, through the years, has been a wonderful teammate and demonstrated what the league is all about. The person must have played in the league for 5 years.

2015 honoree: Howard Hall ("Howie"), a long-time player and member of the League Executive, including Commissioner.

2016 honoree: Glen Shields, a long-time player, captain, member of the League Executive and umpire.

2017 honorees: Mike Forestell, a long-time player, captain and member of the League Executive, including Commissioner, instituted the player packages.
Paul Booth, a long-time player, captain and member of the League Executive, including Commissioner, handled all sponsorship for many years.
Bob Goddard, a long-time player, captain and member of the League Executive, including Commissioner, instituted the playoff tie-breaker format.
Herm Dyck, a long-time player, captain and member of the League Executive, including Treasurer and Commissioner, arranged Banquets for many years.
Anne Colhoun, founder of the League in 1994, long time supporter of 55+ sports in Etobicoke while working for City of Toronto Parks and Recreation and when retired.
